Professor Christopher Baber - PhD BA(Hons)
Chris Baber holds a BA (Hons)
in Psychology / English and a PhD in Speech Technology. He specializes in
cognitive ergonomics, particularly in aspects of human performance, and in
human-centred systems design.
Prof. Baber has published some 40 papers in academic journals and has made some 200 presentations to national and international conferences. Furthermore, Prof. Baber has written 5 books, on topics as diverse as human-centred systems design and future computing systems. Over the past five years, he has obtained over £1million in research income, from industry, EPSRC and the European Union.
In addition to publishing in academic journals and conferences, Prof. Baber has worked with a number of companies on the development of new products. For instance, he worked with Westinghouse on the development of the touch screen interfaces for the ticket-vending machines now installed on the London Underground. Currently, he is working with IBM , Motorola and NCR on product development projects.
Many of the projects that Prof. Baber works on involve close collaboration with industry and services. For instance, the work on the wearable computers involved around a dozen emergency services in field trials, development exercises and consultation. Much of this work has been presented at annual trade-fairs for the emergency services, thus utilizing a relatively novel dissemination route.
